The U.S. special envoy for Venezuela on Friday tried to counter criticism that efforts to force Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from power have stalled and concerns that imposed sanctions will only hurt ordinary people already suffering from chronic food and medicine shortages in the oil rich nation.
