On Christmas morning, the US president drew a line in the sand: money for his border wall or the shutdown will continue. The partial US government shutdown took effect after the Senate failed to pass a budget that included the US$5bn he demanded for a wall. Democratic senators are offering US$1.3bn for border security – the same amount that was allocated in 2018. Now each side blames the other, with no sign of renewed negotiations between lawmakers on Capitol Hill or with the White House
