President Donald Trump on Monday announced Brett Kavanaugh as his nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court, picking a conservative federal appeals court judge who helped investigate Democratic former President Bill Clinton in the 1990s.

President Donald Trump has selected Washington D.C. appeals court judge Brett Kavanaugh as his nominee to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme court Monday night, setting up a major fight on Capitol Hill.

Judge Kavanaugh has impeccable credentials, unsurpassed qualifications, and a proven commitment to equal justice under the law.

The 53 year old Kavanaugh would take over for Kennedy, the court’s long time “swing vote,” as a solid conservative and consummate Washington insider who attended the same Maryland high school as Neil Gorsuch, Trump’s first nominee to the high court.

The two also share a view of the law that could reshape the court for decades to come.

At his prime time unveiling, Kavanaugh gave a hint of how he sees the job.

That stance deeply worrying to Democratic lawmakers, who joined protesters at the Supreme Court, pledging to oppose him.
