White House officials and congressional staffers are continuing negotiations Saturday to end the government shutdown, even after President Donald Trump declared he could keep it going for “months or even years.”
Trump met Friday with congressional leaders from both parties as the shutdown hit the two-week mark, amid an impasse over the president’s demand for billions of dollars for a border wall with Mexico. Democrats emerged from the meeting to report little if any progress.
Trump has designated Vice President Mike Pence, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and advisor Jared Kushner to work with a congressional delegation at a meeting that began Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building next to the White House.
