The British billionaire will hosting a concert for Venezuela just across the border in Colombia on Friday, while embattled President Nicolas Maduro hosts a rival festival just 300 yards away. Thousands of people began arriving early for Branson’s concert, watched by the businessman himself as he made final preparations. Musicians including Latin rock star Juanes will perform with the aim of raising $100m in aid for Venezuela, where hyperinflation has seen most of the population plunged into poverty. Meanwhile Maduro’s festival, named ‘Hands Off Venezuela’, will last for three days and is aimed at stirring up patriotic support for his communist regime.
