Obama stumps for Democrats in California

The former president of the United States said that American “have a chance to restore some sanity in our politics” by voting for Democrats in the midterm elections.

SOUNDBITE (English) FORMER US PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA:

“If these candidates win, I’m absolutely confident that Washington will start working better!”

Barack Obama is officially on the campaign trail again.

On Saturday the former president stumped for candidates in California in the Democrats’ bid to take back the House of Representatives.

SOUNDBITE (English) FORMER US PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA:

“Many of them never imagined running for office, but what they understood is the stakes are high in this election.”

This comes a day after Obama explained why he was breaking the tradition that former presidents dont usually criticize their successors:

SOUNDBITE (English) FORMER US PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA:

“This moment really is different.”

In a sprawling, combative speech, Obama on Friday accused President Donald Trump of stoking racial and economic anxieties and Republicans in Congress of letting him get away with it.

SOUNDBITE (English) FORMER US PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA:

“Appealing to tribe, appealing to fear, pitting one group against another – that’s an old playbook… What happened to the Republican party?”

Trump claimed he wasn’t much affected by Obama’s return.

SOUNDBITE (English) US PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP:

“I’m sorry I watched it but I fell asleep.”

On Saturday, Obama offered what he said was an antidote to political despair – voting.

SOUNDBITE (English) FORMER US PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA:

“The good news is in two months we have some chance to restore some sanity in our politics. We have the chance the flip the House of Representatives and make sure there are real checks in Washington!”
