More than a week after the deadly arrival of Hurricane Florence, the U.S. National Weather Service is warning that areas of North and South Carolina will remain at dangerous flood levels for days to come. Nathan Frandino has more.
Firefighters in North Carolina are washing away dead fish… left stranded in Hurricane Florence’s receding floodwaters.

This catch was found along Interstate 40 near Wallace this weekend, more than a week after Florence hit the state, drowning it with torrential rains and heavy flooding.

Many areas still underwater, and some with more to come.

“The storm itself is gone but its treacherous flood waters remain. If you live in southeastern North Carolina don’t let your guard down. Stay alert for flood warnings and flood stage.”

Several rivers and waterways in North and South Carolina are expected to crest Sunday and remain at dangerous flood levels for days ahead.

So far, about 5,000 people across the state have been rescued by boat or helicopter.

And thousands remain in shelters.

The storm, which killed at least 40 people, has also caused breaches at dams belonging to power companies.

A Duke Energy plant in Cape Fear, North Carolina said it could not rule out a coal ash leak from a coal dump adjacent to its natural gas-fired plant.

State officials say 21 lagoons of hog waste have also overflowed, possibly contaminating standing water.
