Chicago Police: Jussie Smollett took advantage of pain and racism

Jussie Smollett, the “Empire” actor and R&B singer who told Chicago police he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack on a downtown street last month, is now in detectives’ custody, according to a spokesman for Chicago Police.

Anthony Guglielmi, chief communications officer, shared early Thursday morning on Twitter that Smollett had been arrested. Guglielmi told The Associated Press that Smollett turned himself in at central booking.

“Jussie Smollet is under arrest and in custody of detectives,” Guglielmi posted. He added “Supt Eddie Johnson, Commander of Area Central Detectives Edward Wodnicki will brief reporters on the investigation prior to the defendants appearance in court” at 9 a.m. CT at police headquarters.
