At least 40-41 lakh people in Assam are set to lose their Indian citizenship after the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) was released. Out of 3.29 crore applications, only 2.89 crore are considered as citizens of India. According to the NRC coordinator, the NRC draft is not the final list and anyone who are not in the list can make claims again. As it is a border state, Assam always faced the issue of illegal immigrants from neighbouring countries like Bangladesh.
