Aretha Franklin, the brilliant singer and songwriter known for decades as the “Queen of Soul,” died Thursday at her Detroit home of advanced pancreatic cancer. Franklin’s music and larger-than-life voice were unmistakable. Many of her songs were anthems for women and people of color.
