The Republican senator for Arizona, John McCain, has died aged 81. McCain, who had brain cancer, was one of Washington’s most respected statesmen. He served in the US navy for more than 20 years, and then as a senator from 1987. He was fiercely independent until the end, defying Donald Trump on numerous occasions.
