Trump says ‘long way’ to go on North Korea crisis
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday the North Korean nuclear crisis is a long way from being resolved, a day after the North pledged to end its nuclear tests. Nathan Frandino reports.
U.S. President Donald Trump striking a cautious note on the future of the North Korean nuclear crisis.
Trump wrote on Twitter Sunday, quote, “We’re a long way from conclusion on North Korea, maybe things will work out, and maybe they won’t – only time will tell.”
His tweet came a day after Pyongyang – in a major announcement – said that it would end its nuclear and missile tests and scrap its nuclear test site.
The isolated country instead opting for pursuing economic growth and peace.
But Kim Jong-un gave no indication about what would become of the existing weapons and missiles.
Trump’s tweet falls closer in line with the reaction among regional allies.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe welcomed the news but said it must lead to action.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in – who will meet Kim on Friday at the first summit between the two Koreas in more than a decade – said the North’s pledge signified meaningful progress.
And that it would create good conditions for his summit and Trump’s meeting with Kim due in late May or early June.
